Easy Ways To Improve Heart Health

We are sharing our top five super foods that promote heart health! Heart disease is the leading cause of death in America and is caused mostly by preventable risk factors. By engaging in daily physical activity, managing stress levels and eating a diet rich in lean protein, healthy fat and whole grains, you can lower your risk of heart disease or prevent your current disease from worsening. We all know that healthy fats like walnuts, salmon and olive oil promote heart health but here are a few more of our favorites.

Flax seeds

Flax seeds are rich in omega-3 fatty acids, a polyunsaturated fatty acid that has been found to reduce the risk of coronary heart disease, improve platelet function, decrease inflammation, improve blood vessels, protect the arteries from damage and reduce abnormal heart rates.

Berries

Blueberries, strawberries and goji berries are all packed full of phytonutrients known as flavonoids. Flavenoids can lower blood pressure and dilate blood vessels, improving overall circulation. They also help to widen the arteries and prevent the buildup of plaque.

Leafy Greens

Dark colored leafy greens like kale and spinach are an excellent source of vitamins, minerals and fiber, but they also contain ALA, an omega-3 fatty acid. They are nutrient dense and low in calories, making them an essential part of a heart healthy diet.

Garlic

While ACE inhibitors may be required to decrease elevated blood pressure, garlic helps to calm an enzyme known as angiotensin, which constricts blood vessels. It has also shown to have a significant impact on the buildup of plaque.

Dark Chocolate

Dark chocolate contains at least 70% of a special type of flavonoid, known as flavanol, which may help to lower blood pressure and improve overall blood flow to the heart and brain. Dark chocolates flavanols can also help make blood platelets less sticky and able to clot, which reduces the risk of blood clots and stroke.
