Our Top 3 Reasons For Celebrating International Yoga Day
Whether you’re a novice yogi or have been practicing for years, we are convinced that the benefits of a regular practice are endless, both physically and mentally. In honor of International Day of Yoga, we are sharing our top 3 reasons for celebrating the spirit of yoga and reaping all of its incredible benefits.
Yoga can counter balance the negative impact of stress…even with just a few minutes a day. In the fast paced, data driven world we live in today, stress is at an all time high. Taking a few moments a day to focus inward and breathe can calm the body and mind. The breathing practice that is the center of yoga soothes the sympathetic nervous system, also known as the “fight or flight” system, known for constricting the blood vessels and increasing heart rate, often a result of chronic stress. Yoga practice has also been shown to decrease cortisol and adrenaline, the stress hormones notorious for wreaking havoc in the body.
In addition to being really great for the body, it is also really great for your digestion. Yoga twists like triangle pose, seated forward fold, knees hugged to chest and spinal twist are great for stimulating blood flow and oxygenation to the digestive organs. These poses, done on a regular basis, can relieve gas, bloating and discomfort associated with indigestion.
No matter your age our ability, yoga is good for EVERY body. Yoga is certainly not a one size fits all routine. There are classes to fit all styles and capabilities. Classes range from gentle and restorative to spiritual to fitness focused. Let go of your expectations, step on to your mat and just breathe!
