Show Notes:

Tricia Reilly Koch: Doro leads our mindfulness initiatives here at B, B, and R so today we thought we would zoom in to a deep dive to hear from Doro ‘what is mindfulness and why?’

Tricia Reilly Koch: Mindfulness helps us stay focused, how that actually helps us reduce stress. And it actually, as you said, helps us tap into joy.

Doro Bush Koch: It really was one of my amazing brothers who was instrumental in starting me on the path to mindfulness, and that's my brother Marvin.

Doro Bush Koch: I do struggle with sort of a mild, persistent depression. And I know I'm not alone because one in three women and one in five men experienced depression by the age of 65.

Doro Bush Koch: Mindfulness can soothe the nervous system, it can promote calm, it can help us face our fears. And it just helps you to be real about your life.

Doro Bush Koch: Learning to cope with stress in a healthy way will make you and the people you care about and those around you become more resilient. And that's where mindfulness comes in.

Doro Bush Koch: We're all connected and we're here to help each other. I know you've helped me. My family's helped me, and hopefully, I've helped you and others in the people I love and the people I come in contact with because that's what life is all about Relationships.

Tricia Reilly Koch: In this time of holiday seasons and buzz and lots going on, stimulants are going on. But if we can remember that our relationships really are the things that matter and it is the thing that keeps us strong and healthy.

Doro Bush Koch: The brain is like the hardware on the computer and the mind is like the software. One can't function without the other.

Doro Bush Koch: Racing through life, we risk missing a lot of the good things and quite possibly ignore messages about our life, our relationships, and our health.

Doro Bush Koch: I like to call it the fast train to nowhere. When we're rushing and you know, busy this it's this forever busyness that we all walk around with. And the problem is, when we live this way, we're compromising our health.

Doro Bush Koch: There are so many avenues to mindfulness, and it's not limited to a meditation pillow. It can be practiced in nature, on our drive to the market, in our mundane daily tasks, and in our relationships, like we were talking about. And every minute of our lives is an opportunity to become more mindful.

Tricia Reilly Koch: I remember my brother saying, "You better find a dark closet; turn the lights out and sit in there."

Doro Bush Koch: Breathwork is an incredibly powerful tool to reduce stress, and it can promote relaxation and calm, and peace.

Doro Bush Koch: It's going to increase our alertness. It lowers our blood pressure and heart rate and it can boost our immune system.

Doro Bush Koch: Meditation, which of course isn't for everyone, but it is a great tool. And meditation is simply the formal practice of mindfulness.

Doro Bush Koch: When we meditate, we don't and can't suppress our thoughts.

Doro Bush Koch: By training our minds, we can learn to calm the turbulence we all have in our heads.

Doro Bush Koch: Guided meditation is really an easy technique that uses visualization to bring about awareness.

Doro Bush Koch: More than money, success, fame, or even our genes, our close relationships keep us happy, healthy, and living longer.

Tricia Reilly Koch: Where you put your intention, your attention follows.
