We're working toward emotional truth. We're working toward personal truth. Dr. Deborah Korn, PsyD

Talk therapy for me was like reading about pepperoni pizza. EMDR was like smelling, tasting, chewing, swallowing, and digesting a slice of pepperoni pizza. Michael Baldwin, Author

It was remarkable right off the bat to witness the release of trauma from my being: mentally, emotionally and physically. Michael Baldwin, Author

Show Notes:

Dr. Deborah Korn: Emdr stands for Eye Movement Desensitization and Reprocessing.

Dr. Deborah Korn: It's based on the idea that psychological problems are related to a failure to adequately process traumatic experiences and memories.

Dr. Deborah Korn: We define trauma quite broadly, we define it as any experience that feels overwhelming that triggers strong negative emotions like shame or terror and involves a sense of powerlessness or intense vulnerability.

Dr. Deborah Korn: The greater the number of adverse experiences that someone is exposed to, the greater the potential psychological and physical toll.

Dr. Deborah Korn: So when you get triggered, when traumatic memories get activated, the past becomes the present.

Dr. Deborah Korn: We tend to begin with the current distress, and we float back using the emotions that the person's reporting, using the sensations they're experiencing in their body.

Dr. Deborah Korn: The therapist invites the client to just notice to be a passenger on a train, just watching the scenery go by, but always staying connected to the present moment, just witnessing from a distance.

Dr. Deborah Korn: The goal is to be able to think about the memory at the end of the work without distress.

Dr. Deborah Korn: It's a very efficient therapy. And of course, the more trauma that someone has in their history, the longer treatment typically takes.

Michael Baldwin: My sense is that men often need permission or encouragement to share their vulnerability and to actually seek help.

Dr. Deborah Korn: Michael's story, and idea for a book were so compelling that I couldn't resist, I immediately got excited about creating a book, an EMDR book.

Dr. Deborah Korn: He offers a description of what recovery might look like. I provide an overview of trauma, post-traumatic symptoms, the process of recovery and EMDR.

Michael Baldwin: I never thought of myself as a trauma victim or a trauma survivor.

Michael Baldwin: I knew that a lot of bad things had happened to me when I was younger, but I never conceptualized them or thought of them as traumatic.

Michael Baldwin: I started building a false persona of this sort of perfect person for the outside world.

Michael Baldwin: When I got laid off, I felt like I just drove off a cliff because I was suddenly unemployed.

Michael Baldwin: They would come in, swell up in me, pass through me and then this distinct feeling of they're gone and never to come back again, which is the profound sense of relief.

Michael Baldwin: EMDR just completely wiped away this fake persona that I constructed over so many years and I found myself living and behaving in an authentic way.

Dr. Deborah Korn: It frames PTSD as a brain injury and thereby reduces stigma.

Michael Baldwin: There's so much trauma out there. This is just the most efficient and effective way to deal with it.
