A Baseline of Supplements we should all be taking and why
At BB&R, we are all about helping our community achieve their own optimal health. We strive to make the world of health and wellness a little bit less daunting. Everyday, we hear that we should be taking a new vitamin to support some element of our health. We are breaking down the complexity of supplements and giving you a baseline of the ones we should all be taking and why. Let’s dive in!
Fish oil
Fish oil provides us with essential omega-3 fatty acids that regulate inflammation. The tricky part about omega-3s is that they can only be obtained through diet or supplementation. Without sufficient levels of it, every aspect of our health is at risk, including cardiovascular, respiratory, immune, and musculoskeletal systems. We should aim to supplement 500-900mg of omega-3 fatty acids and incorporate oily fish into your weekly diet. Shop our favorite fish oil.
Magnesium
Magnesium is required for over 600 of the enzyme reactions in our bodies. Without proper levels of magnesium, our bodies can suffer consequences of vitamin D deficiencies, slow metabolism, weak bones, irregular heartbeats or blood sugar levels. Magnesium aids in feelings of anxiety and irritability, muscle cramping, and fatigue. On a basic level, magnesium allows our bodies to work more efficiently, and optimize all of our other health efforts. We love New Chapter’s Magnesium and Ashwagandha blend.
Vitamin D
Oftentimes, we have plan to get outside in the sunshine but chores, work, and other responsibilities just keep us cooped up inside. Even when we do get outside, sometimes the sun is not strong enough to meet the vitamin D levels our bodies really need. We need these levels for maintaining bone strength, neuromuscular functions, calcium absorption, and immune functioning.
Probiotics
Probiotics help us maintain proper gut health and functioning. We absorb and digest nutrients in the gut, making its optimal function extremely important. Probiotics are the “good bacteria” that balance out any pathogens that can decrease gut functioning. Our favorite probiotics are the RenewLife capsules. In addition to supplements, try adding in probiotic-rich foods into your diet! Think about anything fermented - pickles, kimchi, kombucha, yogurts - have fun with it!
